Google Trends

May 11, 2007

The guys at Google Labs are cooking up something cool. One of the programs they’re working on is Google Trends, its a nifty tool for analyzing search trends for certain keywords. This program is in its development stage yet, so the results are still approximations. Nevertheless, I tried using it recently and found the results really interesting. How does it work? Just go to the Google Trends website, enter a keyword and click ‘Search Trends’. You can also input more keywords for comparison, just separate each with a comma. You will then be taken to a page which shows some graphs and charts.

Initially, I tried the keywords ‘coffee’, ‘tea’ and ‘milk’ and this is what I got from the Trend History graph which shows Search volume vs. Time indexed since 2004 until the present year.

Here’s the Bar Graph displaying search volume according to Top Ten regions (values normalized over time):

You will notice that the keyword ‘coffee’ (in blue lines) is searched more by Google users, the second most searched keyword is ‘tea’ (red lines) and last among the three is ‘milk’ (orange lines). Note that in the Trend History graph, search volume for ‘coffee’ is higher than the two, it peaked middle of 2005 and slowly being caught up by ‘tea’ searches at the beginning of 2007. Search volume for ‘milk’ (in orange lines) is almost constant since 2004 and much lower than the other two.

This is quite an interesting trend, coffee has long been a popular beverage. This is evident with a lot of cafés sprouting everywhere, particularly specialty coffee shops branching out. But the trend is slowly changing, with tea gaining popularity among fitness buffs as a healthy alternative to coffee.

Try using the keywords ‘superman’ and ‘spiderman’ with Google Trends and you’ll get interesting graphs as well.
