Consumer reviews in video

Whenever I buy a new product or gadget, I always do a lot of research, comparing brands, specifications, quality and price. I make it a point to check out consumer reviews too, they’re the best way to get honest feedback before buying your next digital camera or your Dad’s garage tools. While most product reviews are discussed in words or text, it’s definitely much better if it’s presented in a video, right? Instead of just reading about it, you get to see how it is being used and see other features which are best viewed rather than described or explained.

Looking good with wigs!

Looking great in style can sometimes depend on your crowning glory. Yup, your hair color and how it is styled influences the way you look. Makeovers always involve changes with your hair style other than the usual makeup application. And what better way to get that jazzy new hairdo fast than wearing wigs! Yes, they’re not only used for hair replacement but also for getting a different look. Of course, you have to choose the right wig to complement the features of your face.

Cell phone explosion?!

And we thought cell phones are safe. I was a bit surprised hearing the recent news on TV about a cell phone exploding. Based on the report, the cell phone owner was already asleep in her room when her Nokia N91 exploded. And to think that the cell phone and all its accessories were original. Hmmmm… it’s interesting to note that the cell phone was left charging while they slept and the time of explosion was 1 AM. Did the owner left it charging on purpose and went to sleep leaving it still connected to the power source until she wakes up? We know cell phone chargers automatically turn off after the cell phone is fully charged but maybe it did not in her case. It could have overheated the battery pack which caused the explosion.

This incident is not a rare case though. According to a recent Computerworld article, “Government regulators in the southern province of Guangdong said this week that they had discovered unsafe Motorola and Nokia mobile phone batteries that could explode under certain conditions, the New York Times, Bloomberg, and the Chicago Tribune reported.” Read more here.

With news like this, it’s better to be careful when charging cell phones — just take it off the power source when fully charged. This is just a simple precautionary measure that could save us from future regrets.

One-stop online shopping

I always love going to big one-stop stores where everything you need is already there. Just like Office Depot. I was recently at one of their branches and I’m glad they have lots of choices for office supplies. My laptop bag

Isn’t it great when we get the best buys with our shopping? Finding the right one with the right price after scouting for so many products all over malls and the Internet just feels so great. Well, I just can’t help but be happy about my recent purchase of a bag for my laptop. My big sis spotted it first at one of the shops in IT City. I told her I wanted the backpack type with retractable handle so I can easily lug it around during trips without having to carry by hand the more than two kilograms laptop weight. After searching high and low, she showed me this bag:

laptop bag (front)

laptop bag (side)    laptop bag (back)

Everything I wanted in a laptop bag is here — a retractable handle (which can be hidden inside a back compartment) and wheels at the bottom, lots of pockets and compartments for laptop accessories and can even accommodate two laptops inside. It looks like a small luggage but is easily convertible to a backpack (it has straps at the back which can be zipped inside another back compartment. And the price was just right! I recently looked over similar bags at Robinsons just to compare prices, most of the bags were bigger and doesn’t even have handles and wheels, and they cost more than twice. Great buy indeed, huh. :)

Designer fabrics for your home

July 27, 2007

Shopping and choosing the right fabric and hues for your furniture, curtains and other interior decors is the best way to give your home a professional look. I prefer light pastel colors and clean minimalistic design for interiors and I found some simple yet classy designs at Design Diva Fabrics where they feature designer fabrics for upholstery, draperies, beddings and other textile needs. Their products range from Contemporary, Floral, Oriental, Kids, Vintage to Tropical styles. You can also view items by brand (Bassett Mcnab, Corragio, Versace Home, and other designer labels) or by type (Linens, Silks, Velvets, Wools and all kinds of fabric materials).

They are currently having a warehouse moving sale from 50% to 90% off their entire inventory. I bet their shoppers just can’t resist their discount brocade upholstery fabric and other sale items. I like the plain pastel linens in the Shabby Chic style category, particularly the Design Diva Exclusive "Diva Linen" in Dusty Olive. This 100% Linen fabric is just right for our living room curtains, simple and cool to the eyes, it would match well with the view of our garden as seen through our glass sliding doors.

Great day ahead!

It’s a bright sunny day after a heavy downpour last night. The clear blue skies tell me things are going to be great today! Yup. A lot of things are lined up in my To-Do List –- do accounting, call somebody, fix something, and catching up on some overdue work. Ohh…I don’t want to bore you about them, but I just feel enthusiastic about tackling them one by one. Onwards to positivity and optimism! :D

Parents behave!

July 26, 2007

We may not be aware of it but what we do, be it trivial or significant, has an influence on people around us. Isn’t it that we sometimes unknowingly influence our friends, or people close to us, with our preferences in music, food, and fashion among other things? It also happens within the family. A parent’s principles, habits and lifestyle are the best ways that can influence the children. What they do and say leave an imprint on their children’s minds as they’re growing up. Parenthood is a big responsibility and it isn’t easy being a parent when your kids whine for things you know they don’t need, when they become bratty just to get attention or start some petty quarrels.

I remember when my Mom used to discipline me and my siblings before, how it took her so much time and effort to explain things to us, and teach us life lessons after we had some fights or misunderstandings. She never stopped until everything’s resolved and we were obliged to kiss and make up. My Dad on the other hand was an example of what every father should be, working hard for his family without resorting to drinks and other vices to unwind. Whenever I learn of families with irresponsible parents, I am thankful that I grew up in an atmosphere of love and discipline.

I browsed over some stories of drug abuse and alcoholism from a drug rehab mobile weblog. It’s a collection of personal experiences and memories shared — being addicted and getting treated — on different types of drugs being abused, as well as alcoholism. I was interested on this particular entry about a son who claims to ‘inherit’ his alcoholism from his father. When he was still a kid, he would always see his dad with a drink or more after coming home from work, or after mowing the loan, or waking up in the morning. In this way, his dad influenced him to drink. He was just thankful he got into an alcoholism treatment program where he finally learned the important lesson of taking responsibility for his alcoholism even if his dad passed on this ‘inheritance’ to him. It’s true, he is responsible for it, though it is likely to happen when he was exposed to an atmosphere of alcohol abuse like that while still young and innocent. His dad just didn’t realize how his lifestyle influenced his son in a negative way.

A day with the kids: sleepy heads at the airport

Continued from A day with the kids: Japanese crepes and fruit shakes, anyone?

What a busy day it was! After lunch, we dropped the kids home, though Anzel decided to tag along with us to IT City. It was a long drive going there, she managed to play with her doggie toy at the back seat and even fell asleep until we arrived at our destination.

Anzel playing at the back seat

IT City is a big place for everything about computers and electronic gadgets. After securing my papers, we bought a bag for my laptop. My techie bro also scouted around for a CPU unit, while Anzel and I just toured around, until she got bored and restless. Uh oh. We later had some light snacks at KFC before finally going home, after which, I started packing up hurriedly for my trip later that evening.

My flight departure was 1:35 AM the next day, and we had to be there at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport by 11:30 PM for check-in. R-vin told me he wanted to go with us since he hasn’t been to the new airport yet. While I was still busy preparing, my big sis called up to inform me that the three kids were already waiting for us to be picked up. They were anxious that we already went ahead to the airport. And since it was their bedtime already, they fell asleep along the way. R-vin tried to stay awake while we approached the airport since I told him to have a good view of the building lights.

R-vin at the airport

After the baggage check-in, R-vin went along with me to the VAT Refund for Tourists section which was on the opposite side of the building. Huh. It was such a long walk and thanks to R-vin for helping Auntie with her things.

Anzel and R-jed

We returned to our place to find the two kids still sleeping at their Uncle’s and Auntie’s shoulders. Anzel woke up though but still drowsy while R-jed can’t even open his eyes. Poor sleepy heads. After some photo sessions, and exchanging hugs and kisses, it was time to say bye.

It was a memorable day with the kids — building sandcastles at the playground, having lunch at the cafeteria, shopping at IT City, the long drive going to the airport. Looking back, it was like a ‘farewell day for me with the kids since they will be moving on to Finland next month and I don’t know when we will be seeing each other again. It’s an ordinary yet unforgettable day I will always treasure in my heart.

Relocation blues

My big sis has been shopping for houses lately since they will be moving to another country next month. She has been showing me some photos of houses and asking my opinion which is which. I know moving to another place can be tough — sorting out things, selling stuff, but it's even more difficult finding the next place to live in, taking a lot of factors into consideration like neighborhood facilities, amenities, vicinity to church, school, shopping and recreation areas.

It’s good to browse on a site that specializes on the place you’re moving to, just like Bardell Real Estate’s free relocation guides which focuses on the Four Corners in Florida — the Orlando, Kissimmee, Davenport and Clermont areas. You can browse through their site for Florida vacation homes for sale or read up more information on available residential and retirement properties. The company concentrates their services within the Disney Orlando area and guarantees a hassle free buying or selling of your real estate properties within the vicinity.

Bawal magkasakit!

“Health is wealth.” This is an age old wisdom we’ve heard many times before…and how we take it for granted because of too much familiarity. Lately I have not been good to my body’s needs and have been sleeping late, waking up feeling dizzy and weak. Oh if we could just do everything in a day. Anyway, I received an email from big bro informing us that my nephew J had to be rushed to the hospital, and I was so saddened to find out he’s infected with a disease and had to undergo treatment for months. This is a wakeup call for me, to take care of myself more than ever. When we neglect our body’s needs, our physical resistance weakens, and we can easily be infected with viruses and other harmful diseases. As the Clusivol multivitamin ad says, “Bawal magkasakit.” This roughly means sickness is prohibited or don’t allow yourself to get sick. With the rising costs of medication and hospital bills, I couldn’t agree more to that.

Having pets

“I’m scared of the cat,” little R-jed looked worried as he pointed to the white kitty lying lazily on the steps blocking his way going down. Though fascinated with cats and dogs, he still needs to overcome his apprehension being near them. I shooed the kitty out of the way, so he can go down. Sorry kitty, you’re blocking the way.

Having pets is a nice way for kids to learn the traits of love and responsibility. Taking care of pets, feeding them, making sure they are healthy are some of the concerns of a responsible pet owner. Pets also need to feel loved, and some owners go a long way in doing so, giving only the best food and providing the finest accessories for them such as those luxury items at The Gilded Paw pet boutique where they can find a wide range of classy pet items. It’s a pet lover’s haven for shopping with its cat and dog boutiques featuring pet dresses, jackets, collars, harnesses, furniture, toys and even luxury cat beds among other fashionable items from Swarovski, Cece Kent, Dorothy Bauer, Haute Pooch and other well-known designers.

I know in time, R-jed will be comfortable playing with pets. They’re not only lovable and loyal, they’re fun to play with, being part of a child’s best memories at home.

A day with the kids: Japanese crepes and fruit shakes, anyone?

Continued from A day with the kids: Sandcastles at the playground

We dropped by the house to leave their beach toys. R-vin came along with us as we headed off to the cafeteria. I know he loves going there for his favorite…what else, those yummy Japanese crepes! hehehe… right, R-vin? On our way to the cafeteria, R-jed was the ‘driver’ as he happily sat at his Uncle Tony’s lap while R-vin and Anzel had fun posing for the camera.

At the cafeteria, we found their Auntie Aileen at one of the tables. She already ordered food for us.

fried chicken with sesame seeds noodles

I wasn’t hungry yet since I had a late breakfast so I gave my food to R-jed, while I ordered mixed fruit shakes and Japanese crepes. R-vin had his favorite blueberry-vanilla flavor for his crepe while I shared another crepe with the kids.

Our tummies were stuffed with fruit shakes and crepes for lunch! :)

Next stop, IT City.

Bird watching

July 25, 2007

Whenever I’m out in the garden, it always makes me happy to hear the sweet chirping of birds in the trees. I could also hear them outside my window while I’m working in my PC. I sometimes catch them playing in the clothesline and I wish I could take a photo but they’re too fast for me. Watching and listening to these little creatures can easily make me lighthearted. Too bad, we found out some of their nests fell to the ground due to the recent typhoon.

bird feeder I browsed over some bird supplies at the Anacortes Telescope & Wild Bird website and I like the cool WoodLink Mega Tube Feeder for our feathered friends (right photo). If you’re looking for bird watching supplies, you can browse through their binoculars and bird watching equipment. They offer the popular brand  of telescopes (including Celestron, Meade and Bushnell), astronomical binoculars, eyepieces, accessories, CCD cameras and related books.

I’m sure the feeder would attract more birds in our garden. Yes, I’d like our place to have more of these flying tweeties, listening to more chirps and tweets means a happier ‘music’ in the background.  :)

A surprise call

I was busy working in front of my notebook when my cell phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number. Thinking it was some stray call, I let it rang on and on, until finally I answered it. Guess who it was? My 11-year old nephew R-vin! How sweet! He's in the country with his Dad, but in another province. After talking about the latest Harry Potter book, freezing in Finland, the small Cebu Pacific airbus, playing badminton and other blahs, we finally hung up. Arrgghh… I miss my pamangkins. And it makes me sad that the whole family (big sis, hubby and three kids) will be residing in Finland next month and will be staying there for about two years (?). I wonder when I will be seeing them again. sigh. :(

On natural skin care

Using natural and synthetic-free ingredients for beauty products especially skin care is one of my preferences whenever I go shopping for a new skin toner or facial wash. This ensures me they aren’t harsh or would interact harmfully with my skin. I browsed over the product line of Emerge Skin Care and it’s good to know that these have been formulated free from synthetic and strong chemicals and preservatives. They have a wide range of products such as cleansers, toners, anti-aging, eye care, sun care, exfoliators, and many more. For those with oily-combination skin like mine, they have the Oil-Free Sebum Control Moisturizer which regulates oiliness in the T-zone area while allowing the skin to absorb moisture quickly. Even guys can check out their Men’s Skin Care products — Deep Pore Cleanser, Balancing Lotion, Face Body Scrub and Oil Free Anti-Shine Cream. Their site guarantees your online shopping to be safe with your personal information protected using the most advanced online security system.

More memory for my lappy!

July 24, 2007

I am working hard these days and so is my laptop. However its 1GB RAM is not enough for my multitasking needs. Tsk...My techie bro was right when he suggested that I make it 2 GB the time we purchased it. He told me Windows Vista could eat up lots of RAM and system resources. Oh well… the application windows and graphics are taking considerable time to load. And this is what the CPU and RAM meters are telling me:

cpu meter

No problem with the CPU resources, most of the time it is being used even less than 5%. But the memory? Arrghhh… I really need to add some more chips, huh?

Digicam blahs

I love taking photos. I’m thankful I have a digital camera handy when I am on a trip or attending some important events. There are just some valuable moments I’d like to capture and the digicam is just the right gadget for that. My favorite subject is nature, and recently I took this photo of my favorite plant in our front yard:

purpleflower

I find this plant inspiring and capturing it in photo reminds me of the lessons I learned from Mother Nature.

Recently, I was at a mall and couldn’t help but drool at the latest models of Canon cameras being displayed. Personally, I choose Canon since I have compared its superior pixel quality with other digital cameras for the same number of megapixels. I am actually dreaming of a 10 megapixel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi while browsing over at RitzCamera.com. Its Zoom Kit includes Canon 18-55mm & Canon 75-300mm lens with average customer ratings of 4.5 stars. Now, where is my fairy godmother?

For perfume lovers

July 23, 2007

Light Blue for Women by Dolce & Gabbana EDT Spray 3.4 oz What’s your favorite fragrance? How do you choose your own perfume & cologne? A friend told me, she prefers light perfumes, since she is allergic to strong fragrances. Her faves are D&G Light Blue and Lacoste Inspiration. Good choices indeed. Perfumes are great gifts too. I have a friend who gave us the mini versions of Calvin Klein as gifts when he came from a trip.

Anyway, for perfume lovers, here’s a site that you’ll find enjoyable to browse through and possibly shop — over 5,000 genuine designer fragrances to choose from at EauDeClick.com. Getting into college is no big deal?

Well, actually it IS big deal. I've been through college before and life wasn't that easy when it comes to school expenses and stuff like that. I had to study real hard so I can avail of our school's scholarship which helped a LOT with my tuition fees. Other college expenses include computers and software, books, transportation allowance, boarding and lodging, and even tutors if special help is needed on difficult subjects. There's also the last minute tuition hikes, these are surprises that are not thought about for the total education budget. My parents had to struggle with work just so we children can finish college and have a secure future.

Veggies keep you healthy

I love eating veggies, not only because they’re tasty but more so because of the many health benefits they give. I remember my Mom used to persuade me and my siblings to eat bitter melon, carrots, pechay, cabbage and other veggies since we didn’t find them that yummy before. We all know veggies are nutritious and contain lots of vitamins to keep our body healthy.

Lately I have been more conscious about green food and make it a habit to include more fruits and vegetables in my diet. This is fairly easy when eating at home but the temptation to eat meat, greasy and cholesterol-laden food is there when I’m out in the malls or going somewhere and I feel hungry, I just want to grab a bite of burgers and fries. So how about having a guilt-free snack like this?

My Daily Veggies™ from LaneLabs is a yummy concoction of whole dried vegetables that you can mix with your food or drink to increase their nutritional value. This alternative vegetable supplement comes in a convenient single-serve packet which contains two full veggie servings as per USDA specifications. It has no salt, sugar and preservatives so you get only real fresh vegetables in it plus lycopene, beta carotene, and other nutrients. You can drink My Daily Veggies by mixing a packet with warm water to have an instant nutritious snack with zero guilt. Customers can avail of an on-going promotion — for an order of 2 boxes of My Daily veggies in the next 60 days, they will get a third box for free. Healthy living is made easier with a packet of My Daily Veggies™ at hand.

Shopping for Franklin Covey products

Franklin Covey organizers

I'm a big fan of Stephen Covey’s books which are marketed by the Franklin Covey company. I often check out their website for updates on what’s new or just browse over some motivating articles. It’s great to know that the company also provides learning materials to implement and go hand in hand with the principles taught in the book. They have the Franklin Planner, PALM and other handheld organizers, CDs and other training products.

There's this rss feed widget I tried putting on my blog but the technorati favorites link uses my blog's feed url instead of the blog's site url which I find a bit disappointing…oh well, gotta search again tomorrow.

All about celebs

July 19, 2007

Gosh I am so busy these days! And to top it off, I got a bad headache yesterday…I think I have to slow down a bit, right? Arghhh…no time even to browse on my fave sites, or read the latest news and updates or skim through some celebrity gossip (as if I really am into that). Well, I do read some Hollywood news when taking a break sometimes, at least to give me some idea about the latest celebrity awards, happenings and affairs.

Getting hooked on WP themes

WordPress themes, widgets, plug-ins, CSS styles… these are what kept me up late last night. I was working on our own family domain and was just about to edit some links in my Mom’s blog when I got interested with the many WordPress templates available. I had fun browsing through all 100 plus pages of different designs. I prefer a minimalist look for my future domain, and found some few well-designed themes and downloaded two of them. Now I have this sudden interest in creating my own WordPress theme too. Hmmm… let’s see about that.
