Smart BRO prepaid wifi: mobile broadband access for everybody Part 1
April 23, 2008While I was in Manila for more than a month, I was enjoying my stay at my techie bro’s condo. The only thing that made me sad was the lack of internet access, so I had to login at internet cafés just to keep myself updated with my online tasks, emails, blogs and with chatting.
It was quite tough for me since I am so used to having unlimited broadband access here at home unlike at the cafés where we had to stop at 9pm. Another thing that concerns me is the risk of getting my accounts hacked when using public computers.
Recently while watching TV, I was glad to see one commercial where Sam Milby and Toni Gonzaga were running along with a lot of people and getting excited about Smart BRO’s prepaid wireless internet broadband service. Wooww… it was a dream come true for me! Exactly what I needed for my internet access concerns while on travel. Funny how I even asked some cell card dealers before if they’re selling prepaid internet cards. Now it’s finally here!
So this afternoon, I wasted no time surfing the Smart website where I got the list of authorized dealers for the kit. Here in Bacolod, it’s POS Marketing and I’m glad they have a branch in Robinsons Place which is few kilometers from home. Bringing my laptop to their shop, the Smart BRO kit was installed by their technician within minutes and voila! I now have internet access while on the go.
What’s inside the Smart BRO prepaid kit?
The Smart BRO prepaid kit costs Php4500 (one-time fee) and comes with a USB modem, installation CD, quick handy guide, connecting cables and a sim card which contains your subscriber number.

I can’t really make a valid judgment for now. I have my Globe broadband here at home, so I was able to use Smart Bro for few times only. The first time was at the mall while we were trying it out… speed was OK. The second time was when I had connection probs with Globe, I switched to Smart Bro and I got the same probs, so I assumed it had something to do with the major telco lines.
I’ll be posting some updates when I get to try it next month on an out of town trip. Hope it won’t let me down.
Thanks for dropping by!

Like what I told Yael, I still have to try it when I will be in Manila next week where I don’t have any fixed internet access. For now I am still using a fixed broadband connection at home. Let’s see how it will be. I’ll try to post a review after I’ve gathered the pros and cons.
Posted by tidbits at May 3, 2008, 12:06 pmHi! I purchased one, too. For weeks I have been using it without intsalling whats in the CD, then suddenly dii na ko makaconnect. When I tried to install, wala namang laman yung CD, wala kong makitang file to install. Can you help me? OMG, I’m desperate.
THANSK SO MUCH!
Posted by pinky at May 4, 2008, 12:56 pmPinky: what do you mean “walang laman ang CD”? no files inside? if your OS is windows xp, the SmartBro program automatically installs when you plug the modem (refer to the blue quick start manual for the steps)
if you can’t connect now, maybe you need to reload your account. anyway, this is just a guess. your network could be experiencing problems too. better visit your nearest Smart wireless center.
Posted by tidbits at May 8, 2008, 12:23 ami’ve purchased smartbro prepaid and all i can say is it’s quiet fast if you’re at the vicinity of the cellsite hsdpa is what you’ll get… very fast indeed.. otherwise you’ll get a gprs signal which is quite bad. i’ve tested it at home and we’re 4kms away from the nearest cellsite well it is far more better than dial-up! pwede na pag-tyagaan.

Yup the GPRS signal is soooo slow! I am happy when I am within a 3G network location. Good for you, you’re close to their cellsite. The problem is using it when on the go and being stuck in an area away from their cellsite.
Posted by tidbits at May 26, 2008, 7:39 amP10 per 30minute block????? it should be per minute charge. its not really P10 per 30minute. you start connect at 9:25am then stop at 10:45am (20 minutes) and you will pay P20. is that P10 per 30minutes? hello!!!
Posted by brando at August 26, 2008, 10:37 amAs I said in another post, I think P10 for a 30-minute block is quite reasonable. Most internet cafes charge around P20-30 for it (although Smart could be more generous in pro-rating its rates like Globe where they have P5 for 15 minutes).
In addition, for mobile broadband, other countries charge per Kb (prepaid or postpaid) which for me isn’t cost-effective since I check the internet most of the day and since most sites have become more multimedia-intensive than ever before.
I may agree with some users that telecom infrastructure plays a crucial role in how fast your internet connection is. I haven’t had a clue how Globe’s is but after reading some posts, the speed problem may be because there me not be enough HSDPA-capable cell sites in town and the ones that are don’t reach out too far.
My question for whoever 3G mobile internet user (preferably those who use it on their laptop) is how fast is your internet if you see a 3.5G sign on your handphone or USB modem? Is 3.5G the equivalent of HSDPA?
