My travel blog has found a new home: Goodbye Ploghost

March 14, 2009

Finally… my travel blog happysteps.net is now transferred to another web hosting service! Thanks to my techie bro for helping out with backing up my database and going through the process of moving my files to the new server. At least I won’t have to deal with unreliable webhosting (Ploghost, that is) anymore, and I hope there won’t be frequent unscheduled server downtimes and unsatisfactory technical support in the future. What I’ve learned from the whole experience is just simple: back up your blog regularly!

Blog maintenance is very much important, and unfortunately, I haven’t backed up my database files when the unexpected disaster occurred, when Ploghost’s server crashed. They didn’t have backups of my website, so my site was recovered with a database that was dated to October 2008.

If you’re hosted with Ploghost, don’t expect them to have regular backups of your site. Actually, don’t even think they have backups of your site. Scary, isn’t it? In other words, just do the backup yourself and don’t rely on them although as a webhosting company, they SHOULD perform regular backups of their client’s websites, right? Well, unfortunately for me, they didn’t. Recovering my lost files from the Google cache took about two grueling days.

This is why regular backup is very essential to site maintenance. It’s very much like getting a low cost term life insurance online for your blog should anything disastrous occur.

hi GK, better transfer to another hosting server ASAP. make sure they have 24/7 customer support. this is where ploghost fails. their customer support is not always there… and during weekends, you can’t rely on them. there was one time i experienced my site was down and it was a weekend… i had to wait until monday for my problem to be looked into. and to think of two days loss of site traffic and revenue. being hosted on poor and unreliable service is not worth it… just transfer to a better hosting service ASAP.
