Learning something new
April 27, 2009I used to do technical research as my main job description, and yes sometimes it could get boring. Good thing I would also be assigned for field work and site inspection which I gladly accept as a break from my regular office tasks. Doing exhaustive research can be challenging and when I’m done with a project, the feeling of self-fulfillment is there especially since I learn something new along the way.
As a business mentor used to say, the mind should always be open to new learnings and one should always be sharp and alert, feeding the mind by reading books and informative articles. Personally, I feel that topics that are important to one’s life such as finances and self-development should be given more priority. For instance, financial intelligence is as important as emotional intelligence. Knowing how to manage your finances and not being a slave to unnecessary expenses are just some of the wisdom gained from helpful financial books.
Another busy week ahead
I have so much going on in my mind these days… first and foremost are my online ventures which seem to keep me busy, but I still plan to set up more niche sites. I know it’s a matter of investing my time with these online ventures to have a passive income in the future. The hours just seem to whir by lately, and I would even be surprised that the day has already ended, and with still so much work to be done!
Oh well… but yesterday, I took time for shopping and I’m so happy that I found a pair of 3 lbs dumbbells for my exercise routine. Also, I used up my SM Advantage credits to add up in my bag purchase. Mom also let me use up her remaining SM Advantage credits to help me out with the bag which was a bit pricey for me. Thanks for the total of 300 plus advantage credits, both from Mom and me, which was equivalent to Php300 plus. Yup, 1 SM Advantage credit is equal to 1 Php. Now, I am happy I finally have a light beige large shoulder bag to match with my light cream colored heels.
So now it’s back to work on another busy week ahead!
Cleaning day!
April 24, 2009What a very busy and productive day it has been. Finally, with the househelp on duty today, we were able to tidy up my room especially the windows and floor. Although she has to report again tomorrow morning to finish my bedroom windows on the front side of the house. Now that my bedroom floor is spic and span, I also feel like something heavy has been lifted up within.
Next job on the list will be my bathroom which I was thinking of remodeling a bit. For instance, the shelves are beginning to get crowded with all sorts of toiletries, some of them even taking up space on top of the water closet. I’m also thinking of installing a multiple towel bar with shelves so it can accommodate some of my bathroom stuff.

Sad news
April 23, 2009While opening my Yahoo! Mail, my attention was drawn to the headline. It was about the apparent suicide of a leading mortgage company’s CFO. It’s such a tragic story especially when somebody would end his life because of a stressful career due to money-related issues. Tsk… things are not looking up good for most corporations these days when it comes to finances and investments. Last night, mom heard the news on TV about two insurance companies being suspended for accepting new clients as they still had to comply with some requirements.
Financial problems are usually part of a struggling family’s concern. Well, not for those who are financially stable and free. This has been my long time goal, to be financially independent someday, and not having to worry about money matters. According to business mentors, it helps to learn about financial management, letting money work for you and not the other way around. It is important to be prepared as we know that life is very much unpredictable.

HP Pavilion dv4t series
April 22, 2009My laptop Pavi, an HP Pavilion dv2t series, will be 3 years old soon. So far, I am happy with it except that it easily gets hot despite having a laptop cooler underneath. I suspect it’s the accumulated dust inside. Yup, it should have a date with the maintenance guy soon. Oh well.
So now I am browsing over HP Pavilion dv4t series laptops, these are the newer models with better features. The basic configuration starts at about $600, but if you prefer more HD space or memory, then it comes with a price. For instance, one can opt for the T4200 (2.0 GHz) processor or a faster T9550 (2.66 GHz). For the memory, it’s a choice between 1GB DDR2 (1 Dimm), 2GB DDR2 (2 Dimm) or 4GB DDR2 (2 Dimm). And what about the disk space? One can choose between 160GB, 250GB or 500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive.
Those with limited budget can start with the basic configuration and upgrade later when their budget permits just like what I did with my laptop’s memory. I bought my laptop with 1GB only and later upgraded it to 2GB.
Buying a laptop can actually be tough. I remember when techie bro and I searched all of IT City just to find the right brand and model for me. Thankfully, I chose the right one.
Choosing term life insurance
April 21, 2009At first, when I came across the word ‘term life insurance’ I couldn’t distinguish this from the usual ‘life insurance’. Well, that’s how limited my knowledge about insurances has been. But now I know what term life insurance is - a specific kind of insurance for major events in one’s life, such as getting married, buying a car or a house, having a baby, getting a divorce, or even preparing for retirement.
Insurance needs change throughout one’s lifetime, as important events happen to a person. These life milestones, especially for a family, offer uncertainties which need protection for a person’s dear ones. It is best then to reassess if a certain family insurance is still adequate and apt once a major life event happens, and one has to see to it that his loved ones are sufficiently protected.

Moving to a new place can be so stressful!
Just one month to go before their relocation to Europe and my big sis had been busy with so many activities such as sorting out their stuff for selling, keeping or shipment. After living for many years in Thailand, imagine the many things a family can accumulate, from books to furniture, appliances and clothes. Aside from that, she had to finalize job-related matters before her last day at work. Then there’s the challenge of choosing a flat to move in based only from online photos and recommendations of her hubby’s company.
Anyway, that was then… now, they are very much at home in Europe and the kids are well-adjusted to their new school, life and new friends. Of course, my sis and her hubby enjoy their new home as well.

Drunk driving defense
Recently at my nephew’s graduation party, we had some guests drinking few beers while having a good time conversing with friends. Some guys had to say no to more drinks though as they still had to drive on their way home. Now that’s being a responsible driver. We don’t want them driving in a zigzag direction, weaving or swerving on their way home, which could possibly end in an accident. These drunk drivers should really be taught a lesson and should be arrested.
In the US, getting arrested by troopers for DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol) offense can be tough. Once the case is lost in court, it’s a big blow not just financially but career-wise, because of license suspension and being given a permanent criminal record. This could also mean losing your job and facing fines or penalties.

Sodium Ascorbate helps me get a good night’s sleep
April 16, 2009I recently talked to an acquaintance about the benefits of regularly taking Sodium Ascorbate, a more potent form of Vitamin C. Sodium Ascorbate is in alkaline form, thus one can take more than 500mg and not get painful stomach aches or harmful side effects as compared to the acidic commercial Vitamin C brands which usually come in 500mg tablets.
I was telling her about how it helped ease my monthly period cramps after taking four capsules and she was excited to let me know that taking it before going to sleep does wonders as she swears she sleeps better and feels refreshed the next day. Well, guess what. I did take two capsules before going to sleep the other day and yes, it was the sweetest sleep I’ve ever had for a long time now although I really don’t have problems getting myself to sleep.
So, if you’re having problems with insomnia or experiencing waking up during the night, try Sodium Ascorbate as Vitamin C, it really gets you to dreamland fast, and you feel like being on a comfortable sleep number bed. If you want to know more about the benefits of Sodium Ascorbate and how to get the capsules at wholesale price, just email me at etidbits at yahoo dot com. I’ll be glad to help you out. Remember, prevention is always better than the cure.
When technology fails to deliver…
April 15, 2009…you get disappointed users!
Ok, it does rhyme, yup?
With almost every gadget available and techie stuff here and there to make our lives more comfortable and convenient, who wouldn’t be frustrated when one of your computer hard drives gets infected with a virus or your mp3 player won’t make a sound? As most of us become more dependent on technology for our daily tasks, we also need to remind ourselves that even the most reliable systems are not that immune to downtime or failures.
I just read a Cnet news Webware article by Stephen Shankland which briefly reports that Yahoo! Mail, which reportedly has millions of users around the globe, recently had an outage which even at such a small percentage already affected lots of users. I did remember logging in to my Yahoo! Mail one time and getting an error page. Even big companies such as Comcast and Google’s Gmail also had downtimes recently.
Personally, I feel restless when I can’t connect to the Internet if our ISP does some maintenance work. I get dismayed when suddenly there’s no electricity due to some power failure. I am just so dependent on technology for my daily tasks. How about you?
Where do you get your news?
April 14, 2009I am not really a news person. I don’t listen to radio talk shows just like my Uncle who unfailingly turns on his radio early in the morning to listen to political and social commentaries. I am not fond of watching news on TV as well.
I just find our local TV news show too sensationalized or full of unnecessary reports of violent happenings around the city. Do we really need to know about a certain person’s crime committed against his neighbor because of some petty quarrel? C’mon media people, we want news that prioritizes more on social and community issues.

On learning life’s lessons
Life offers us varied challenges and each day we learn from our successes and mistakes. Some would readily say that “experience is the best teacher” when it comes to most of life’s lessons. While nearly everyone would agree to this known saying, our experiences may not be the best teacher there is according to a business guru. He stressed that the best teachers are those who have been there, they are called mentors.
Do we really have to go through a trial and error process to experience or learn some of life’s lessons? It is best to get our lessons from those who have been there and became successful. It simply is a waste of time and effort to go through painful experiences just so to learn from them the hard way.

Easter Sunday lunch by the sea
April 13, 2009Easter Sunday can be celebrated and enjoyed even with just a simple lunch by the sea. After the Easter Sunday morning Mass, we prepared our picnic paraphernalia and off we went to the beach resort nearby. We invited my Uncle, Auntie and their daughter Bea over the weekend. Actually we requested Auntie to come over so she could cook our favorite Rellenong Bangus or stuffed milkfish. There are many ways to debone the fish and to cook it. Auntie does it by taking the insides without any cutting. She’s quite an expert with this method.
The preparation of ingredients for Rellenong Bangus takes effort and time. I helped Auntie with preparing the filling which consisted of diced onions, garlic, carrots and potatoes sautéed with green peas and the fish meat. The ingredients are then mixed with beaten eggs and the filling is inserted inside the fish together with cut boiled eggs. The stuffed fish is then rolled in starch to avoid excessive splatter during frying which might hurt the cook. Once the fish is completely coated with starch, it is then deep fried.

Smoking habits are considered when getting life insurance quotes
April 7, 2009Aside from queries regarding the status of one’s health in relation to cancer, psychological disorders, stroke, diabetes, drug abuse and other medical conditions, one important concern when getting a life insurance quote is the issue of being a smoker. For instance, when filling up the online form to get instant term life quote at the ReliaQuote page, one has to disclose of his tobacco use whether he has never smoked, is currently a smoker or has quit for a specified number of years.

Getting a life insurance is recommended for those who care for their family’s future as a financial safety net and protection should accidents occur. To get instant term life insurance quotes, simply log on to ReliaQuote and fill up the form with your personal information. You will then receive the 10 lowest quotes from leading insurance companies. Choose your preferred policy and apply for it online. On being beautiful, slim and sexy the Hollywood way
April 3, 2009Hollywood stars do anything they can to be perfectly beautiful, sexy and slim. It’s part of their job and asset as most people rationalize. Most celebrities think they have to look good in whatever outfit they don, from evening gowns to equestrian apparel, they feel like they should please not just their fans but also themselves.
On the other hand, Hannah Montana teen star Miley Cyrus has this to say (as featured on Glamour’s May 2009 issue) about the Hollywood trend of having slim and sexy body:
“I think it’s lame, because it will eat at you forever. I’ve been at photo shoots where I’ve tried something on and said, “Oh my gosh, why don’t these fit?” But I’ll never be a six-foot-tall, 95-pound model; I’m meant to have a little more meat on my bones.”
That’s right Miley. It really depends on a person’s body frame. Some people are just heavier or have “more meat” than their slim and thin counterparts. The thing that matters is being healthy without the bulge or excess fat.
Are you enthusiastic about what you do?
April 2, 2009I just thought about this question after watching a video about a flight attendant who did a hip-hop way of welcoming passengers onboard. Here’s the video from Yahoo! Click on the thumbnail pic below to view the video:
You bet this guy loves his job and was enthusiastic about it. I’m sure the unique welcome rap made the passengers feel it was not just another regular flight.
Creative enthusiasm for what you do sets you apart from the rest, whether you’re a high profile executive, a research scientist or just having one of those healthcare jobs. Loving what you do and being enthusiastic about it generates a happier environment for the people around you.
Hope the Conficker worm won’t bug you down this April Fool’s Day
April 1, 2009Happy April Fool’s Day!
Did somebody play jokes or pranks on you so far? Well, just early this morning Dad warned me about the dreaded Conficker worm set to activate today and wreak havoc on Windows systems. He was watching the news on TV about it. I already read about it the night before and there was really nothing to be alarmed about as long as one’s computer has an updated antivirus program installed. Well, I have AVG free edition to thank for and I’ve scheduled my AVG computer virus scan daily in the afternoon. So, nothing to worry about… really.
What concerns me more is my laptop’s 2GB RAM which sometimes can get near 98% usage. Ugh…then there’s also my digital camera which needs some compact flash memory upgrade.
Anyway, other than April Fool’s, one thing that’s great about this day is the fact that it is my nephew’s birthday. Happy birthday Josh!
