Using a barcode scanner to speed up your Google Books My Libary list

June 14, 2009

This is sooo cool! Barcode scanners are not just for department stores anymore, they’re very much useful for making our lives easier, such as speeding up the manual task of inputting ISBNs for Google Books list.

Matt Cutts of Google shows us in detail via YouTube video below how to import the ISBNs from the barcode printed at the back cover of four sample books, a USB barcode scanner was plugged to his laptop and was used in scanning the ISBNs.

As seen from the video, instead of having to input a book’s ISBN manually to add to a user’s My Library list in Google Books, the barcode scanner does it quickly, prior to clicking the Import Books link. This saves a lot of time and effort, and ensures no mistakes for the ISBNs, right?

The cool thing about this is once your books are added to your Google Books account, you can let Google do a virtual search on any particular topic within your library without having to flip through the pages yourself. Adding the books from your collection at home is also good for inventory purposes and lets you easily manage them from your computer.
