Reunion with the guitar

April 24, 2010

Wow I can’t believe it, I finally did something I should have done long long time ago. I’m not sure if it’s been more or less than a decade since I last played the guitar, but after listening to Brooke Fraser’s You’ll Come (it’s one of the songs included in Hillsong United’s With Hearts As One and Hillsong’s This Is Our God albums), I can’t help but search for the lyrics and chords, and ended up looking for my guitar as well. So, off I went to the small room upstairs, took one of the guitars, wiped off the dust, and played until my fingers hurt.

I had to review my basic guitar skills as well. I already forgot some basic chords, how to read tabs and how to tune the guitar. Whew. I played You’ll Come many many times, going over the song again and again so the shift of fingers between chords would be smooth. Guess what, I was so engrossed with playing, it was like a long time reunion between me and the guitar. I hardly noticed the time and can’t believe it was already past midnight. I’m a bit worried I might have some zits because of staying up late and I hope I won’t be searching for acne products then.

My fingers are really hurting now from all the playing. I used to have calluses on my fingers as I regularly play the guitar back then and now I have to grow them again. You can’t play guitar well if you don’t grow calluses on your fingers, it’s part of the game and they keep your fingers from hurting in the future. I’m planning to play at least 30 minutes daily, not only to improve my skill but to grow those much-needed calluses.
